Have you upgraded to the September 2025 launched iPhone Air or iPhone 17 series mobile device recently? If you have, you’ll want to know how to get yourself out of a pickle if you ever have a frozen iPhone 17 or Air.

The good news is despite the new internal A19 chip hardware, the process remains the same. Don’t worry as we’ll walk you through how to force restart an iPhone 17 series or iPhone Air in case of a glitch or unresponsiveness.

How to Force Restart an iPhone Air or iPhone 17 Series Phone Using the ‘1-2-3’ Method

Starting from the iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 models, Apple has changed the ‘hold two-button’ restart method to a 1-2-3 sequence method.

Guide to the ‘1-2-3 Force Restart iPhone Air & 17 Models

Iphone Air Force Restart Sequence

For a quick and effective restart of a frozen iPhone, follow these steps in succession:
  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button
  3. Press and hold the Side Button (the one located on the right side)
NOTE: Do not feel the need to release the button sequence when the ‘Slide to Power Off’ slider appears.

Keep the last button sequence pressed until the screen blacks out and the Apple Logo reappears. After the logo appears, you can let go of the buttons.

Specific Force Restart Notes for the iPhone 17 Series & iPhone Air

  • Although the iPhone Air is thinner, the buttons feel more shallow or tactile and though this feels different, the ‘1-2-3’ button sequence is the same.
  • Avoid trying to force restart iPhone 17 and air models while they are physically connected to a Mac or PC through a data cable as it could trigger Recover Mode or DFU Mode instead.
  • Unplug the device before attempting a restart unless you actually want to restore it.
  • New iPhone models feature a dedicated Camera Control button on the lower right side of the device. This is not the correct button and pressing it will not launch the restart sequence.
  • For the final step of the sequence (pressing and holding the side button), it could require holding for up to 20 seconds for the Apple logo to appear, so don't let go too soon!

How to Force Restart Any iPhone (Including iPhone Air & iPhone 17 series) Without Buttons

In case your iPhone isn't frozen but is glitchy and needs to restart, you can trigger a restart without buttons using the Siri Shortcut. In iOS 19, the highly integrated Siri can start the restart with the voice prompt ‘Siri, restart my iPhone’. This will be confirmed by the voice agent with a button on the screen.
